H1N1 (Swine) Flu Precautions 

The Indiana State Department of Health has asked every school in Indiana to prepare preventive measures to avoid further transmission of the current H1N1 flu strain. The H1N1 flue strain exists worldwide. A national web site is available at www.hhs.gov or www.cdc.gov.

We are asking faculty, staff, and students to follow these recommendations to support staying healthy:

  • Wash your hands before each activity or meal.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, use a disposable tissue, and cough into the crook of your arm when possible.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Avoid handshaking, hugging, and personal contact.
  • If you have a fever, see your medical practitioner.
  • Eat properly, stay hydrated, and get sufficient rest.
  • Wash your hands (repeat this frequently).

Emergency warning signs of this strain of flu:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

Groups at highest risk of complications from H1N1 virus: 

  • Pregnant women 
  • People ages 0-24 
  • People of any age with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease
