Knights sign three for 2009-10 - 4/9/2009

INDIANAPOLIS – Marian College men’s basketball coach John Grimes is proud to announce the commitments of three standout athletes for the 2009-10 edition of Marian College men’s basketball.

Mac Fiely, a 6-6, 195-pound forward from Greenville High School, committed to play golf and basketball at Marian College next season. The Greenville, Ohio, native was named District 9 Division I Player of the Year after he led his team with 16 points per game, was the team’s leading rebounder, and shot 47 percent from three-point range. In addition to being named team Most Valuable Player, he was a Division I All-Southwest District honorable mention and All-Darke County Player of the Year. Fiely was selected to play in the Ohio East-West All-Star Game where he had 20 points. Fiely also played AAU basketball with College Bound Elite.

“The thing I like most about Mac is the kind of person he is,” said coach Grimes. “I am very impressed with him, and think he is the kind of person we want in our program. I first saw him on the second night of the basketball season, and was very impressed.”

“Mac is the kind of player we need. If he fits in the program like I think that he will, Mac will be a contributor to our team even during his freshman season.”

Donnie Abrams, a 6-7 forward from North Central High School, also committed to play basketball for Coach Grimes.

The Farmersburg, Ind., native tallied 9.6 points per game and hauled down 6.8 rebounds per game as a senior. Abrams also averaged 13 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior at North Central. He also played AAU basketball with the Terre Haute Jammers, coached by Brad Miley.

“Donnie played with some really good players at North Central, and he really excelled playing with them,” said Grimes. “We just feel very fortunate getting a player of his caliber and ability as a potential inside post man.”

Michael Barton, a 6-9 center from Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, also signed with the Knights. The Indianapolis, Ind., native shot 53 percent from the field in leading Brebeuf to the sectional championship game. In addition, Barton averaged 1.2 blocks per game and was named a member of the City-County All-Star Game. Barton was also named All-County honorable mention.
"We feel Michael has the potential to develop into an outstanding post player," said Grimes. "We are excited about having the opportunity to develop a post game which will compliment our perimeter game, which has gained experience over the past two seasons."
