Buzzer beater snaps Knights' streak - 1/3/2009

 
 
INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College men's basketball team looked to pick up its first conference victory on Saturday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd at the Physical Education Center.
 
However, with one second on the clock, the Trojans knocked down a jumper to pick up a 62-60 come-from-behind victory. The Knights fell to 9-5 on the season and 0-4 in MCC play.
 
After Taylor jumped out to an 18-10 lead, the Knights took the lead, 23-22, with 7:43 remaining in the first half. The first half featured two lead changes and 10 ties as the Knights were able to maintain a one-point lead, 38-37, heading into the interval.
 
The Trojans opened the half with a bucket to take a 39-38 lead, but the Knights responded with a three-pointer from junior J.R. Howell (Lapel, Indiana/Lapel) to retake a 41-39 lead with 18:29 on the clock.
 
Taylor tied the game with a bucket, but the Knights created some breathing room with a 6-0 run to take a 47-41 lead with 14:29 to go. The Knights pushed the lead to eight on two occasions with the final eight-point lead coming at the 10:19 mark, 56-48.
 
The Trojans went on a 7-0 run to cut the gap to one, 56-55, with 7:25 remaining. A bucket from redshirt sophomore Brandon Malone gave the Knights a three-point lead, 58-55, with 5:56 to go.
 
Taylor knotted the score with 4:12 to go and took a two-point lead, 60-58. A pair of free throws by junior Heath Chamberlain tied the score at 60 with 2:33 remaining and set the stage for drama.
 
The teams traded missed jumpers before sophomore Jordan Tucker drove down the lane with 31 seconds remaining and missed a challenged layup. The Trojans set up a play and Jacob Bream dropped the baseline jumper to earn the 62-60 victory.
 
Junior J.R. Howell (Lapel, Indiana/Lapel) led three Knights in double figures with 16 points. Junior Heath Chamberlain (Brazil, Indiana/Northview) narrowly missed a double-double after he finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Tucker (Kirklin, Indiana/Clinton Central) added 11 points for the Knights.
 
The Knights remain at home next Saturday when the No. 2-ranked Bethel College Pilots come to the Physical Education Center at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast LIVE on XL 950 with Brad Wochomurka (p-b-p) and Director of Athletics Joe Haklin (color) calling all the action.
