INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College men's soccer team looked to snap a six-match losing streak and score its first goal in 450 minutes when it traveled to Kuntz Stadium to battle NCAA Division I IUPUI.
The Knights did get on the board for the first time in five matches, but IUPUI proved too much as the Jags earned a 2-1 victory.
The Knights fall to 3-10 on the season and now have lost seven straight matches.
The first half finished scoreless, but the majority of play was in the Marian College defensive end as IUPUI outshot the Knights 10-2 in the first stanza.
The Jaguars continued to put relentless pressure on junior goalkeeper Brad Sontag (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) as they outshot the Knights in the second half, 16-4. The defense finally caved at the 57:17 mark as IUPUI took a 1-0 lead.
The Jags tallied another marker at the 71:08 mark to take a 2-0 lead and with the Knights struggling to score, it looked as if they would fall in a shutout one more time.
However, junior Mark Manning (Marion, Indiana/Lakeview Christian) got on the end of a free kick from junior Don Oldham (Indianapolis/North Central) inside the six-yard box. Manning bulged the back of the net at the 80:23 mark and gave the Knights their first tally in 530 minutes of play to make the score, 2-1.
The goal was Manning's first of the season and the assist was Oldham's first of the campaign.
The Jags were able to hang on over the next 10 minutes to earn the 2-1 win.
Sontag finished the day with nine saves to lead the Knights in defense while six different Knights registered their six shots.
The Knights head back into MCC play when they head to Goshen College on Saturday night. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
