INDIANAPOLIS - The seniors on the Marian College men's soccer team were briefly honored at the Marian College Multi-Purpose Athletic Facility on Wednesday in their final regular season home match.
However, the weather and the 90 minutes of soccer action did not go as planned as Grace College defeated the Knights, 1-0, to hand them their sixth consecutive defeat.
The match was played in a continuous driving rain and Grace got on the board with the match-winner at the 85:42 mark.
The Knights had their share of chances as they outshot the Lancers, 23-15, for the game with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
A free kick from 40 yards out by freshman Conner DeLong (Indianapolis/Lawrence Central) forced the Grace goalkeeper into action at the 50:54 mark. DeLong bent a beautiful free kick toward the upper 90 of the left post, but the goalkeeper made a spectacular save.
DeLong's shot was one of the better opportunities for the Knights as they drew the Lancers goalkeeper into having to make nine saves on the evening.
Senior Brad Sontag (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) made two saves.
The Knights hit the road for the rest of the season and begin their five-match road swing on Thursday when they head down 16th street to Kuntz Stadium to take on IUPUI. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
