INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College women's basketball team honored its senior class on Saturday afternoon in the final women's basketball home game of their career and as Marian College.
The Knights could not overcome the Foresters in a tightly-contested ball game as No. 16-ranked Huntington was able to pull out a 57-52 victory at the Physical Education Center.
Marian College fell to 19-11 on the campaign and finish 7-9 in the Mid-Central College Conference. The Knights will be the No. 6 seed for the MCC Tournament starting on Monday night.
After Huntington was able to open a 10-point lead, 15-5, with 12:53 remaining in the first half, the Knights closed the gap to three, 21-18, after a 13-6 run with 8:05 remaining. However, the Foresters were able to push the lead to 11, 34-23, heading into the locker room at the interval.
The Foresters took the lead into the locker room based on an 18 points off 13 Knights turnovers in the first frame.
However, the Knights would put up a fight in the second half.
The two teams traded buckets over the first 1:45 of the half as HU was able to maintain its 11-point lead, 38-27. The Knights got hot and went on an 11-0 run over the next 3:27 to tie the score, 38-38, with 14:48 to go. We had a game on our hands.
Huntington answered with a 6-0 run before the Knights tied the score again, 46-46, with 8:50 to go in the game. A short 4-0 HU run gave the Foresters a 50-46 advantage, but the Knights cut it to one, 50-49, with 3:37 to play.
Huntington pushed the lead back to four, 53-49, but the Knights would not quit as they closed it back to one, 53-52, with 1:56 remaining.
It looked as if the Knights would give themselves an opportunity for a lead as a turnover gave the ball back to them with 1:40 to go. However, a turnover with 90 seconds to go gave HU free throws and they were able to sink one of two to increase the lead to two, 54-52.
The Knights had a hot with 1:11 to go, but a three-pointer refused to fall and another foul gave the Foresters another chance from the line where they sank one of two again to set the stage for potential drama.
However, the Knights could not convert in the final 53 seconds and Huntington was able to close out the 57-52 victory.
The Knights outrebounded Huntington, 45-25, for the game, but 24 turnovers resulted in 23 Foresters points to just 11 for the Knights.
Fifth-year senior Whitney Frame (Lynn, Indiana/Randolph Southern) led two Knights in double figures with 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, and handed out four assists in her final home game.
Junior Kristin Houck (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) notched 13 points and grabbed five rebounds while junior Megan Egenolf (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) dished out a game-high six assists and had a team-high three steals.
