UPLAND, Indiana - The Marian College women's basketball team closed the calendary year 2008 with its 15th straight victory at Odle Arena at Taylor University on Wednesday.
The Knights defeated St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, 75-32, to earn their 15th consecutive victory to close the Taylor University Holiday Classic.
After SMWC opened a surprising 9-6 lead with 16:51 remaining in the first half, the Knights went on a 22-2 run over the next 10:57 to seize control of the game, 28-11. A layup cut the lead to 15, 28-13, but the Knights responded with an 18-1 run to close the half and blow the game wide open, 46-14, at the half.
The Knights pushed the lead to 34, 50-16, before a Pomeroys jumper cut the lead to 32, 50-18, at the 17:49 mark. However, the Knights outscored the Pomeroys 10-3 over the next 8:29 to stake themselves a 39-point lead, 60-21.
The teams traded buckets the rest of the way and the Knights were able to close out the 75-32 victory to earn their 15th straight win.
The Knights only had one player in double figures as fifth-year senior Whitney Frame (Lynn, Indiana/Randolph Southern) notched a game-high 12 points in just 14 minutes of action. She also had three rebounds and three assists.
Fourteen Knights scored with freshman Courtney Wesner (Chalmers, Indiana/Frontier) tallying seven points and grabbing four rebounds. Junior Megan Egenolf (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield), sophomore Fara Abernathy (Covington, Indiana/Covington), and freshman Emily Einhaus (Napoleon, Indiana/Jac-Cen-Del) each tallied six points for the Knights.
Freshman Jessica Johnson (Clarksville, Indiana/Clarksville) handed out a game-high six assists while freshman Hannah Boeh (Lebanon, Indiana/Lebanon) added a team-high four steals and two blocks.
Megan Egenolf and Whitney Frame were both named to the All-Tournament team for their performances in each of the two games.
The Knights celebrate the turning of the year before they head back to Upland, Indiana to take on the Taylor University Trojans, who defeated Ohio Dominican, 76-66, on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m., at Odle Arena.
