UPLAND, Indiana - Carrying a 15-game winning streak, the Marian College women's basketball team traveled to Taylor University for its first game of the new year. However, the result did not go as planned as the Knights fell for the first time, 72-53, to the Trojans on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights fell to 15-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Mid-Central College Conference.
The teams traded baskets to open the game, but a 10-2 Lady Trojans' run put Taylor up 14-8 with 14:00 remaining in the first half. After a Knights' bucket, Taylor tacked on a 6-0 run to take a 10-point lead, 20-10, with 13:42 to go in the half.
The Knights cut to within five, 26-21, with 5:51 remaining in the first stanza, but Taylor outscored the Knights 9-5 to close the half with a nine-point advantage, 35-26.
The Lady Trojans opened an 18-point lead, 52-34, with 10:45 remaining after they outscored the Knights 17-8 to open the half. Taylor sealed the win with a 6-0 run to put the game out of reach, 70-46, before closing out the 72-53 win.
The Knights shot just 36 percent (21-for-58) for the game and 18 percent (2-for-11) from three-point range. Taylor outshot the Knights from the free throw lin, 25-12.
Junior Molly Lauck (Greenwood, Indiana/Center Grove) had a career afternoon after she notched 14 points and grabbed six rebounds while making two steals.
Fifth-year senior Whitney Frame (Lynn, Indiana/Randolph Southern) added 13 points and three assists for the Knights.
Senior Jessica Carr (New Castle, Indiana/New Castle) and junior Megan Egenolf (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) could not get going as they were a combined 3-for-13 from the field. However, Egenolf had a team-high eight rebounds for the Knights.
"In order for us to win games we need to have a group of people show up to compete during every possession," said head coach Todd Bacon. "We did not have that today."
