The Richard G. Lugar Franciscan Center
for Global Studies presents:

"Making music across cultures and nations: the vision of a young conductor"

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Krzysztof Urbański

September 2012 marks the start of Krzysztof Urbański’s second season as music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He continues as chief conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, who also appointed him their artistic Leader in recognition of the major contribution he has already made to the orchestra. From April 2013, Urbański will take up the position of principal guest conductor of Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
Upcoming debuts include concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Wiener Symphoniker (featuring the world premiere of HK Gruber’s Into the Open with Martin Grubinger), Rotterdam Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra (with Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing the U.S. premiere of James MacMillan’s Piano Concerto No. 3) and Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition, he will also conduct two major European tours in 2013: with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (with soloists Sol Gabetta and Alice Sara Ott) in spring, and with the European Union Youth Orchestra (with Boris Berezovsky) in the summer.
Forthcoming highlights see him returning to NDR Sinfonieorchester (to conduct The Rite of Spring), Bamberger Symphoniker, SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Gulbenkian Orchestra (in a program that includes Holst’s The Planets and Thomas Adès’ Polaris) and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (conducting Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra). There are also plans underway for a European tour with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in autumn 2013.

Polish repertoire plays an important part in Urbański’s programming. He led the opening concert of the Polish Focus at the 2010 Schleswig-Holstein Festival with Sinfonia Varsovia conducting Górecki’s Symphony No. 3. He made his debut at the 2010 Grant Park Festival in Chicago with a program including Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra, and conducted Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima with NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg in autumn 2010. He has also been invited to take part in the birthday celebrations for Krzysztof Penderecki in November 2013 and open the 2014 Beethoven Easter Festival.
Urbański graduated from the Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007 and in the same year, was the unanimous First Prize Winner of the Prague Spring International Conducting Competition. He has conducted all the major Polish Orchestras, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra and served as Assistant Conductor to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007-09. He holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Music (Orchestral Conducting) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
