- Friday, April 1 - Marian Hall, room 251: faculty research
seminar. Speaker: Dr. Carl Lecher, on "Undergraduate Research in Chemistry:
Environmentally Benign Organic Chemistry". The presentation
included a broad overview of Green Chemistry, a discussion of the role of
Green Organic Chemistry at Marian College, and highlights of some recent
accomplishments of Dr. Lecher's undergraduates.

Undergraduate Research Conference.
Maggie Hoyt, from Dr. Lecher's group, gave a presentation on
"The Tandem Grignard Addition-Oppenauer Oxidation - A Greener Synthesis
of alpha-Trimethylsilyl Phenyl Vinyl Ketone."
- Tuesday, April 19 - Marian Hall, room 355, 2.30-4.20pm. Marian College
Undergraduate Symposium in Green Chemistry. Presentations from
Maggie Hoyt, Brandie Davis, Jon Wilson, Brandon Fultz, Jeannie Prosser,
Amy Roberts, and Stephanie Okerson. Topics included: (1) A Safer SN1 Reaction,
(2) A Bleach Oxidation of a Secondary Alcohol to a Ketone,
(3) A More Environmentally Benign NaBH4 Reduction of an Aldehyde,
(4) An Environmentally Benign Chemoluminescence Demonstration,
(5) A Greener Synthesis of a-Trimethylsilyl Phenyl Vinyl Ketone,
(6) A Tandem Baylis-Hillman Condensation / Cyclization Reaction for the Preparation
of Aromatic Heterocycles.
