Student Spotlight: Benjamin Hendricks ‘16

by Katie Staples | May 20, 2013

Marian University is proud to recognize first-year student Benjamin “Ben” Hendricks for finishing first in the Finish Line 500 Festival 5K Race held in downtown Indianapolis earlier this month. The victory marked Hendricks' second consecutive win of the popular 5K race which precedes the well-known OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. Following his win (with a finish time of 16:10), Hendricks completed an interview for WISH-TV, Indianapolis' CBS affiliate, for which he sported a Marian University running jersey.

“I want to represent Marian University well everywhere I go,” said Hendricks, 19, a business finance major with a minor in motorsports management. “And what better way to do that than in a huge race with a 'MARIAN UNIVERSITY' on my chest.”

Though Hendricks hails from a long line of Butler University graduates, he found that Marian University was a better fit for him personally. The promise of a significant athletics scholarship helped make his decision to enroll at Marian University even easier. Consequently, Hendricks now participates on Marian University's cross country and track teams.

Hendricks and his teammates run between 60-90 miles each week. He enjoys that Marian University is located so close to downtown Indianapolis; often he and his teammates will meet up with the Butler and IUPUI teams to run together along the Indiana Central Canal. He admits to sneaking on nearby golf courses from time to time for early morning jogs, too.

After winning the same 5K last year, Hendricks was joined by several members of his family in this year's race—grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins—in an effort to defend his title.  His mother and sister were present to cheer him on, as were two of his Marian University teammates, sophomore Joe Landeros and junior K. Ben Villarin. Hendricks' father ran the 13.1-mile mini marathon, a race that Hendricks plans for himself eventually too—just not during the college season. “It's rough on your body,” he says.

So what are Hendricks' other goals? While he would like to win the 5K race for the third time next year (with Coach Holman's blessing, of course), Hendricks is primarily focused on team achievements.

“We want to win the cross country and the track conference titles for Marian University, as well as qualify for the national meets. The ultimate goal would be in an individual All-American and bring some trophies and get a few championship rings in the process!”

Hendricks is thankful to his teammates, Track Shack mentors, coaches, family, and friends for helping him stay motivated and get better every day. He remarks, “It's a great time to be a Knight. As far as training goes, I have a great group of teammates that I work out with every day...it's turned into more of a family.”
