Thinking Outside the Classroom

by Nancy Crosby | May 02, 2013

As part of the BUS 450 International Business course in Term 7, instructor John McGuire arranged for the 18 MAP students enrolled in the class to visit the Islamic School of Indianapolis. Students were welcomed by the school principal, Mr. Tewfik Choukri, who is originally from Morocco, and Islamic art teacher, Mr. Najib El-Gouche, born in Lebanon.

Choukri and El-Gouche freely discussed the Islamic culture and answered students’ questions on topics such as treatment of women, terrorism, and Sharia business practices. While there, students were allowed to quietly observe the evening call to prayer at sunset, one of five times each day that Muslims traditionally pray. “The event was provocative for thought and an enjoyable experience on a subject that is consistently in world news,” said McGuire.
