Theatre Program

Who we are.

A diverse group of students from all majors and disciplines collaborating to create art.

What we do.

The Department of Theatre produces two mainstage productions each year - generally one musical and one play. In addition to our two mainstage productions, we produce a children's show that tours to local schools.

Where we do it.

Our students perform in the multi-million dollar, 500 seat Marian University Theatre

Why we do it.

Many reasons. It's human. It's connected. It's needed. It's fun.

Theatre helps us cultivate our muscles for empathy. As Tracey Moore, Associate Professor of Theatre at Hartford University says in her article from the Chronicle of Higher Education, "As technology and machines consume more and more of life, perhaps theater can help us remember what it means to act like a human."

Our students gain experience in leadership, communication, organization, teamwork, creativity, and problem solving through hands on experience in a variety of tasks, responsibilities, and job positions. Students are involved in almost every aspect of launching every theatrical production from early concept and designs to the finished product on opening night by participating as actors, technicians, run crew, and even as designers and directors.

How to Minor in Theatre?

Theatre minors take core courses in acting, tech production, and design with the Department of Theatre. Additional courses, dramatic literature and theatre electives, can be chosen from a variety of courses offered by the art, English, communications, music, and modern languages departments. Students are encouraged to enhance their education and gain professional experience by auditioning or working with theatre companies off campus. Practicums and internships are available with numerous professional and community theatres in Indianapolis.

The Department of Theatre espouses a theatre rooted in the Franciscan tradition that exemplifies the universities core values of dignity of the individual, peace and justice, reconciliation, and responsible stewardship.
