Marian University Awards Full-Tuition Academic Scholarships

Marian University, Indianapolis’ only Catholic institution of higher education, has selected eight current high school seniors to receive St. Mary Academic Scholarships, providing full-tuition toward an undergraduate degree. The scholarship is renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters, provided the recipient maintains a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.00.

The recipients, their high schools, hometowns, and intended majors are:

• Nikaela Busekrus, Sacred Hearts Academy, Kailua, Hawaii, History
• Rachele Cafazo, Mt. Notre Dame H.S., Cincinnati, Ohio, Nursing
• Jenna Diebolt, Saint Theodore Guerin H.S., Carmel, Indiana, Nursing
• Julia Gerwe, Notre Dame Academy, Independence, Kentucky, Political Science
• Nicole Kruer, Our Lady of Providence H.S., Floyds Knobs, Indiana, Biology
• Regina Obergfell, Bishop Dwenger H.S., Fort Wayne, Indiana, Elementary Education
• Grant Schoenig, Roncalli H.S., Indianapolis, Indiana, Engineering
• Michael Schultz, St. Francis DeSales H.S., Louisville, Kentucky, Theology/Philosophy

Combined, the eight students earned an average GPA of 4.45, and their average score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) was over 1447. One of the students scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT.

“Marian University’s class of applicants for the Fall 2016 semester is, academically, the strongest in our university’s history in terms of GPAs and SAT scores, and the recipients of our St. Mary Scholarship reflect the academic strength of their future classmates,” Paul Woolston, vice president of enrollment management, said. “But these students are more than just leaders in the classroom. They each have exemplary records of leadership in terms of volunteerism, community service, and extracurricular activities. Based on what I’ve witnessed in these students, our nation’s future is in very good hands.”

To be considered for the St. Mary Academic Scholarship, applicants must hold a minimum high school GPA of 3.75, and earn minimum test scores of 1200 (Critical Reading and Math portions) on the SAT or 27 on the ACT. More than 100 applicants competed for the scholarship this year. Recipients were chosen following a series of on-campus interviews held in January 2016.
