The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation has recognized Marian University graduate Philip Gulley ’88 with its 2016 Indiana Authors Award.
Gulley is one of six writers with Indiana ties to be named winners or finalists for the foundation’s annual Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award. Gulley won the regional author award.
“I'm deeply honored,” Gulley said. “Because of the many fine writers in Indiana, there's some pretty stiff competition. To be selected as one of the winners for 2016 is not only an honor, it's a real surprise!”
Well-known and respected throughout the state of Indiana, Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. He has published 20 books, writes the popular monthly Home Again column for Indianapolis Monthly, and is a regular contributor to The Saturday Evening Post.
Gulley earned a bachelor of arts in theology and sociology from Marian University in 1988. He went on to receive a master of divinity at Christian Theological Seminary in 1992.
“I think most writers are products of their environment, and Indiana has certainly influenced me,” Gulley said. “My public education as a child, and my college experience in Catholic, Disciples of Christ, and Quaker universities and seminaries were instrumental in my formation as a writer. It taught me a moral and spiritual world-view that continues to inform my writing.”
Gulley will be honored at the foundation’s annual Indiana Authors Award Dinner on October 29, at the Central Indiana Library in Indianapolis.
