Education Event Brings National and Local Experts to Campus

Educators College ProgramTop national and local education thought leaders and pioneers, converged upon Marian University for a "Teacher Innovation Pipeline Convening" event to discuss The Educators College teacher preparation program changes on January 6, 2017.

The convening was a day-long event, gathering feedback from organizations and universities addressing teacher preparation from all angles. The event covered such topics as: recruitment, developing teacher residency programs, mastery-based progression, the impact of talent, the advances and set-backs of teacher preparation programming, and a variety of other areas surrounding teacher preparation.

"It's time for a revolution and I am happy to be here at Marian because this is one of the few institutions in the country willing to say we don't have it right. And, let's do it better,'" Kate Walsh, president of the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), said.

NCTQ has been partnering with The Educators College faculty to help them focus on new and innovative delivery methods and to ensure students graduating from the program have a mastery of the concepts necessary to be an effective leader.

Hosted by The Mind Trust and Ken Britt, Ph.D., dean of The Educators College, the day began with a brief overview of how The Educators College at Marian University will change the narrative for teacher preparation in Indianapolis.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to host and welcome talented people to come to Indianapolis, give us their feedback, and affirm our direction,"  said Dr. Britt. "We are all challenged to move with a new vision to support our most vulnerable students in the state, especially urban core and underserved areas.”

Participants discussed several topics for recruiting and the selection of candidates, such as developing sophisticated screening levels to maximize the number of students who are positioned to be effective teachers and remain in the profession and cultivating and identifying a more diverse pool of teaching candidates earlier at the high school levels.

"Teacher preparation is one of the most important and meaningful components of any university,” Beth Bray, program officer for The Walton Family Foundation and investor for the convening said. “And, it is really one of the most important things a university has to offer. But what we have seen nationally is that many teacher preparation programs haven't necessarily progressed and evolved as our society and our industries have progressed and evolved."

Bray also believes that it is encouraging and exciting to see Marian University think differently and how The Educators College will move teacher and principal preparation into the 21st century.
