Marian University has hired Scott Heady as the new men’s basketball coach as announced by athletic director Steve Downing Thursday morning. Heady becomes the ninth coach in Marian basketball history and comes to the Knights from Carmel High School.
“I am very fortunate and excited to be named head men’s basketball coach at Marian University,” said Heady. “Marian has an excellent academic reputation and athletic tradition, and has everything we need to compete for national championships.”
Heady spent the last six seasons as the head coach at Carmel where he led the Greyhounds to back-to-back Indiana 4A state championships in 2012 and 2013. Heady has compiled a record of 116-27 during his tenure, which is the most wins in 4A basketball during that span. His teams won four Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference titles and set a school record with four consecutive 20-plus win seasons.
“Scott Heady’s resume speaks for itself and we are extremely excited to have him at Marian University,” said Downing. “Scott is well-connected in the state of Indiana and we believe he can help our men’s basketball program reach its full potential.”
Heady is no stranger to the collegiate game as he spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Anderson University. During his time with the Ravens, he helped them to a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship in 2010 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament that same year. Anderson was 38-18 during his two seasons and ranked in the Top 25 nationally both years.
“I’m looking forward to working with our returning players on and off the court, assembling a great coaching staff, and recruiting talented high-character student-athletes to MU,” said Heady. “My family and I would like to thank President Dan Elsener and Athletic Director Steve Downing for providing me with this tremendous opportunity.”
Heady also spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Warren Central, where he went 191-103 and set school records for most wins, highest win percentage and consecutive winning seasons. His teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state for seven seasons and he led the Warriors to a MIC title and to a sectional and regional title in 2000.
Prior to Warren Central, Heady started his coaching career at Connersville High School where he went 25-23 in two seasons and won two sectional titles. A graduate of the University of Indianapolis, Heady played four seasons under Coach Billy Keller and was a two-year captain for the Greyhounds.
Heady’s coaching career has garnered him plenty of recognition, including being named the Indianapolis Star Coach of the Year three times and the MIC Coach of the Year four times. He was also elected president of the Marion County Coaches’ Association in 2005 and coached the Indiana All-Stars in 2013.
Heady will finish his season at Carmel before joining the Knights. A news conference is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in the PE Center with a meet-and-greet reception open to the public to follow at 2:30.
