Marian University to host faculty art exhibit on campus

Art Exhibition

The Department of Visual and Creative Arts Faculty Exhibition, featuring artwork created by Marian University’s Visual and Creative Arts (VCA) faculty Jenny Ambroise, William Foley, Kevin Rudynski and Crystal Vicars-Pugh, will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery located in Marian Hall from August 28-October 23, 2017.  A reception of the exhibit will be held on Thursday, September 14, from 4-6 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are generously funded by the Talbot Street Art Fair and are free and open to the public.

The Department of Visual and Creative Arts Faculty Exhibition offers a range of media including graphic design, printmaking, photography, painting, ceramics and collage.

Painting Professor, Jenny Ambroise’s current body of work reflects her experience leading up to her father’s death. Ambroise’s paintings invoke the Romantic notion of the Sublime allowing the viewer to experience a power beyond human control.

Pulitzer Prize winning photography professor William Foley’s current body of work is inspired by Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Capa and Duane Michals.  Foley looks for the art and narrative in the everyday. His work, whether covering a war or simply making photographs on a walk in Florence, Mexico City, or Indianapolis, are made in the hope of enlightening the viewer.

VCA Department Chair and Graphic Design Professor Kevin Rudynski’s prints depict varying concepts. However, Rudynski is consistently motivated to communicate his life experiences in a visually unexpected approach that thoughtfully engages the viewer.  Rudynski’s commitment to the workmanship of risk oftentimes is at tension with preserving the vitality of the image. Most of his prints employ a combination of letterpress with lithography, screenprint, and woodcut.

Sculpture and ceramic professor Crystal Vicars-Pugh’s current body of work is inspired by cartography and the ephemeral characteristic of nature. Using mixed media materials such as antique maps, thread, birch bark, and oil paint, Vicars-Pugh creates textured surfaces that invite the viewer into a world of sewn layers.

The Marian University Art Gallery is located on the west end of the second floor Marian Hall on the Marian University campus. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Please contact Gallery Director Crystal Vicars-Pugh at cvicarspugh@marian.edu or 317.955.6665 for additional information.
