Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine students take the next big step, learn where their residency training will begin

The graduating class of Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine conducted its own “March Madness” celebration today as each of the class’ 149 students learned where they would begin their post-doctoral medical specialty training during a ceremony known as “Match Day.” In just its fifth graduating class, the College had 97 percent of its students placed with medical residencies at hospitals in Indiana, the Midwest, and beyond. Match Day

Match Day is administered by the National Resident Matching Program of the Association of American Medical Colleges and is held at medical schools throughout the nation each year on the third Friday in March. As part of the unique Match Day 2021 celebration at Marian University, students chose one of two options to commemorate the occasion safely with faculty, staff, family, and friends:

  • Some students chose to make an appointment for a “drive-through” celebration, where they pulled up in their cars to receive the news of where they would begin the next phase of their educational journey.
  • Other students opted for a brief, socially distanced in-person celebration in the Evans Center.

“I am thrilled that Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine had such a successful year,” said Amanda Wright, DO, interim dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “This superior cohort of medical students have a bright future ahead of them as 54 percent of them begin residencies in primary care and 28 percent remain in Indiana for the next chapter in their professional careers.

 Of the 149 students:

  • 28 percent will begin residencies in the State of Indiana, while 64 percent will train in one of five states – Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, aligning with the University’s commitment of placing physicians in Indiana and neighboring states.

The students will celebrate an in-person and socially distanced commencement on May 9.
