Evan Mathias was born with congenital defects to both legs and has been on prosthetics since he was one year old. Mathias has used adversity as fuel, especially while competing in the sport of golf.
At ten years old, Mathias began playing in amputee golf tournaments, winning many. He went on to earn ten varsity letters from Jay County High School and played college golf at Marian University.
Now, Mathias is now preparing for the biggest tournament of his life.
The United States Golf Association is holding the first-ever U.S. Adaptive Open from July 18th-21st. The Adaptive open is a national championship for golfers with physical, visual, and intellectual impairments. Mathias is one of 96 golfers to qualify for the tournament - which is being held at Pinehurst Course No. 6 in North Carolina.
The field includes golfers from 29 states and 12 countries. Evan Mathias and Indianapolis native Payton Zins will be the two players representing the state of Indiana.
