The Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) celebrated the 2023 White Coat Ceremony as the official kick-off for medical students in years three and four entering their clinical years. After spending the past two years in classes, MU-COM students are sent to clinicals to gain real-world experiences with their newly received white coats. However, these students would not be where they are at the start of their medical careers if it weren't for the many professors who put in countless hours of work and dedication to the student's success. The White Coat Ceremony closes the night with four special awards acknowledging these professors' achievements over the past year. Dean Amanda Wright, DO, shares, "The Excellence in Teaching awards will be given to four faculty members who were nominated by their peers on the basis of their management of the learning environment, their engagement with students in and out of the classroom, the collaborative spirit with which they work with their colleagues, and the level of expectation and accountability they set for themselves and their students."
The 2023 awardees include:
- 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award – Biomedical: Samina Akbar, Ph.D., Professor of Microbiology
- 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award – Biomedical: Medhane Cumbay, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacology
