Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine students matched with residencies in Indiana and beyond

Excitement, anticipation and triumph! Those feelings were running high amongst the Marian University community as 141 medical students from the College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM), learned where they would begin their post-doctoral medical specialty training during a ceremony known as “Match Day.” Marian's College of Osteopathic Medicine celebrated its eleventh anniversary with 99% of its students placed in medical residencies, including 40% in Indiana programs.  

Match Day is administered by the National Resident Matching Program and is held at medical schools throughout the nation each year on the third Friday in March. As part of Marian's Match Day 2024 celebration, faculty, staff, community partners and families joined students and their classmates in the Indiana Roof Ballroom for the big announcement.  

Marian University’s medical school graduates are Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), who are physicians trained with a whole person approach to medicine – treating the entire person through a partnership with the patient and a focus on preventative healthcare. Utilizing the connection between mind, body, and spirit is central in the DOs approach to patient care.  

 “Mission aligned successes seen in Match Day 2024 provide a wonderful and exciting way to celebrate the 8th graduating class of the College of Osteopathic Medicine,” said Amanda Wright, D.O., dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “We are proud that more than half of students will begin primary care residencies – meeting Indiana and the Midwest’s critical need.” 

Of the 141 students, 40% will begin residencies in the state of Indiana. This number increases to 67% with the addition of students entering residency programs in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, aligning with the University’s commitment of placing physicians in Indiana and neighboring states. 

While overwhelmed with joy and relief during the process, Marian College of Osteopathic Medicine student Arielle Coy-OMS-IV said she wasn't surprised by her match as she'll head to Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis. "I built such a strong rapport and connection with the residents, faculty, and hospital while I rotated through the program as a third and fourth year student. In my gut, this was the program that always felt right for me and when you feel such strong ties to a place, you have to trust the feeling is mutual." 

Arthur Equihua-OMS-IV also credits MU-COM for his success. He matched in the emergency room at Henry Ford Hospital in Wyandotte, Michigan. "Marian has taught me that regardless of how busy you think you are, there is always more work to do. He explained that it is hard to pull yourself out of your everyday routine and perceive your current situation from a 10,000-foot view. "Marian taught me how to do that, and I know that will help me mentally as I begin to juggle the responsibilities of being a first-year resident."
