Marian University Announces New Interim Dean, Department Chairs for the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering

Indianapolis, Ind. – Marian University has appointed Jeffrey D. Carvell, Ph.D., as the new Interim Dean for its E. S. Witchger School of Engineering. Dr. Carvell has been a professor at Marian University since 2014.

In his new role, Dr. Carvell will direct strategic planning for the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering in partnership with the Marian University Board of Visitors, as well as oversee enrollment, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and budget.

“I am excited to be leading the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering into the future, and I look forward to continuing the excellence that has already been established,” said Dr. Carvell. 

While at Marian University, Dr. Carvell has served as associate professor of mechanical engineering, director of academic administration for the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering, assistant professor at the Marian University School of Mathematics and Sciences, and director and coordinator of the dual degree engineering program. He has a bachelor of science degree in physics from Butler University, a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in physics from Purdue University.

“Over the past 3 years, I have worked closely with Dr. Carvell as we opened the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering, hired faculty, and recruited our first students. He is a fantastic educator and extremely committed to our students. Jeff has gradually taken on more responsibility related to academic administration, curriculum design and other key roles over the past few years,” said Dr. Binh Q. Tran, Marian University’s chief academic officer and founding dean of the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering. “Dr. Carvell will also receive tremendous support from Drs. Abner Chen and Salomon Turgman Cohen who will take on added responsibilities as inaugural department chairs of their respective engineering programs.  I have great confidence in the engineering leadership team and am excited for the future of Witchger Engineering!”

Marian University has also appointed inaugural department chairs for the E. S. Witchger School of Engineering: 

  • Abner Chen, Ph.D., is the inaugural department chair for the Department of Civil & Computer Engineering and Engineering Physics. 
  • Salomon Turgman Cohen, Ph.D., is the inaugural department chair for the Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineering.
