Marian University Students Win Media Awards

Catholic Media Association’s college awardsMarian University is delighted student media has achieved remarkable success at the 2024 Catholic Media Association’s college awards, capturing eight prestigious awards. This impressive haul underscores the exceptional talent and dedication of our student journalists and broadcasters.

The Siren, Marian’s vibrant radio station, secured a well-deserved Third Place in the category of Best Collegiate Radio Show for “The Marian Direct - Episode 4 - Gaza, Hamas, and American Political Divide,” produced by Miguel Spalding-Price and Sean Effron. Meanwhile, The Phoenix, our student news source, garnered seven awards that highlight its excellence in journalism and design. Notable achievements include a Second Place for Excellence in Layout and Design, attributed to Julia Akre for The Phoenix Fall 2022/Spring 2023 edition, and a Second Place for Excellence in Editorial Writing, awarded to Macey Kenna for “Future-Proofing Education: The AI Dilemma in College Classrooms.”

Additionally, The Phoenix earned Third Place for Best Front Page and Best News Reporting, with further recognition including Honorable Mentions in Environmental Journalism and Journalist of the Year categories for Elizabeth Schmidt and Julia Akre, respectively. These awards reflect the high caliber of work produced by our students and their commitment to impactful, insightful journalism.
