Keely Qualkenbush is a sophomore in Marian University's Ancilla College's veterinary nursing program. She graduated from Westville High School and is a standout student both inside and outside the classroom. She maintains a busy schedule, balancing her coursework with her roles in the Office of Admission and as a residence assistant in the residence halls on campus. In addition to her busy schedule, during her first year at Marian, she played softball—however, she now serves as the baseball team's manager.
Keely's passion for animals began early in her life, which is evident from her ten years of experience showing goats, poultry, and cattle. Her involvement in farm work and animal care throughout high school solidified her decision to pursue a career in veterinary nursing.
Reflecting on her time in the veterinary nursing program, Keely emphasizes the program's hands-on approach to learning. "I have learned so much already," she shares. "It can be challenging because there is so much to remember, but I continue to study so I can do the best job possible." She highlights the program's practical opportunities, such as placing IVs, safely drawing blood, and restraining animals without harm.
Keely advises high school students interested in veterinary nursing to get involved early. "Volunteering at a clinic or animal shelter while in high school is invaluable," she says. "It not only gives you practical experience but also helps you determine whether working with animals is the right path for you," Keely recalls her visit to the EVCC in Westville, where she toured the facility and observed their day-to-day operations. Her message to prospective students is that the veterinary nursing program offers many hands-on opportunities, from field trips to classroom work with live animals and observing veterinary surgeries, all of which help prepare their class for a successful career in veterinary nursing.
If you visit campus, you might be fortunate enough to have Keely as your tour guide. She enjoys meeting with prospective students and their families, sharing her passion for animals and her love for the university. After graduating this year, Keely plans to continue her studies in the animal science program, combining it with her veterinary nursing degree to further her dream of working with animals every day—a dream she's turning into reality.
