Marian University Names Experienced Communications Executive to Key Leadership Role

Michael JohnsonMarian University has welcomed a seasoned higher education communicator as its new vice president of marketing and communications, Michael Johnson. Drawing on more than six years as chief marketing and communications officer at East Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas, Johnson brings extensive leadership experience in brand strategy, presidential communications, and enrollment-focused storytelling. He and his wife will divide their time between their longtime home in Louisville and a residence in Indianapolis as they settle into the Marian community, a move he describes as a meaningful homecoming after years of commuting.

Reflecting on his early weeks on campus, Johnson shared, “My first month at Marian University has been excellent. I have had the opportunity to meet with university leaders, students, faculty, and staff, all of whom have been extremely welcoming and supportive.”

Rooted in his Catholic faith and a deep commitment to mission-driven education, Johnson sees this role as the culmination of a long-held professional aspiration. Serving at Marian, he notes, fulfills his goal of contributing to a private Catholic institution where learning is Christ-centered and animated by the Catholic and Franciscan tradition. Outside the office, Johnson prioritizes time with family, especially his two granddaughters, enjoying trips to the zoo, hiking, and exploring together, as he and his wife stay busy with ongoing home renovation projects in Louisville.

“Michael Johnson brings the strategic insight and proven leadership we need as Marian University continues to grow in scope, impact, and national reputation,” said Daniel J. Elsener, Marian University president. “His deep understanding of higher education communications will enhance how we share our mission and engage families, students, and partners. We are extremely pleased to welcome Michael to our leadership team.”

As he continues his leadership role at Marian, Johnson is focused on positioning the university for continued growth while helping ensure that its Catholic Franciscan identity remains at the heart of its story.
