Faculty and staff volunteered across Indianapolis as the university prepares for a new academic year together
Marian University faculty and staff stepped away from their usual work Wednesday to serve their neighbors throughout Indianapolis as part of the university’s annual Community Day.
Employee volunteers fanned out across the city and campus for an afternoon of service, putting Marian’s Franciscan values into action through projects that benefited neighborhoods and nonprofit organizations.
Near The Grove at Cold Spring, Marian volunteers picked up trash and helped clean areas around the university’s developing Near Northwest Indianapolis campus. Elsewhere, employees sorted donated clothing for St. Vincent de Paul Indianapolis at Mission 27 Resale, where proceeds from thrift store sales support the organization’s food pantry and community assistance programs.
Those projects were among several service opportunities available to employees on Community Day, including work with EcoLab, The Exchange, Indy Cultural Trail, Aspire House, and Mid-North Food Pantry.
The service projects capped a day designed to bring Marian employees together before the start of the academic year. Community Day began with a mission-centered welcome and reflection, followed by a presentation by nationally recognized researcher Dr. David Yeager on the science of motivating young people. Employees also heard updates from university leadership before heading into the community.
For Marian employees, the afternoon offered an opportunity to move beyond mission-related conversations and demonstrate it through service.
