Four Marian University undergraduate student research groups in the Department of Biology were awarded 2017 Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Research Awards. Winners received funding towards their research projects from the Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society and have an opportunity to present their findings at the national convention in March 2018.
Four of the 16 research awards went to Marian University students. Recipients and their research proposals include:

Luke Elsener and Paige Swan: "Effects of Available L-Arginine on β-Amyloid Plaque Formation in C. Elegans Model of Alzheimer’s Disease"

Ruthann Gorrell: "Developing Novel Strategies to Reduce Age-Related Bone Loss

Kegan Main and Aidan Washer: "The Effects of Nitric Oxide and Lactate on Human Keratinocyte Proliferation"
•
Bianca Stockmeier: "Low Doses of Actinomycin D Selectively Inhibit Cancer Cells with Nucleolar Amplification."
Gamma Eta, Marian University’s chapter of the Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society, is one of 76 chapters nationwide. The chapter provides students the opportunity to expand science knowledge and experience outside the classroom. Students also have the opportunity to hold leadership roles within the chapter through officer positions.
