Attendance for Illness and Athletics

Illness and Personal Reasons

If a student is going to miss less than a week of class, handle the missed attendance according to the stated policy in your syllabus.

If a student misses or plans to miss more than a week of class, please inform Student Success and Engagement through an email to Karen Candlish at kcandlish@marian.edu. She will follow up with the student and inform the student’s faculty if the absences should be excused.

Athletic Events

Athletes are excused for competitions and travel to the competition, but not for practices or meetings. However, at times, travel days may include a morning practice.

If you have a question or concern about the absences requested or taken from an athlete, you can contact the Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning at eosika@marian.edu for guidance. She will work with you to determine what is best for the student’s academic progress given the situation.

Several resources are available to faculty. These resources are linked on the Provost website:

  • The teams' practice schedule is posted at the beginning of the year on the advisor's resource page. This is the best estimate of what the athletes will be doing. Practices may change throughout the year.
  • All games are posted on MUKnights.com, should you wish to check if a game is scheduled. You can also download the calendar to your Outlook calendar to have just-in-time reminders.
  • To locate the name and email of your athlete’s head coach, visit MUKnights.com.
