Frequently Asked Questions for Students and Alumni

Students may browse openings for part-time or federal work study (FWS) positions on Handshake, The Exchange's online job board. Having trouble? See the Student Employment page for additional assistance.

In order to apply for a position on Handshake, you must have an approved resume. The Exchange team personally reviews submitted resumes with the objective of helping students build resume-writing skills to be competitive in the workforce. For resources regarding resume style and formatting guidelines, see our Prepare to Apply page. If you would like more personalized assistance, you may certainly request an appointment with an Exchange counselor to bring your resume up to approval standards. This is often the best approach to getting your resume approved quickly.

If you are eligible for Federal Work Study, this will appear on your financial aid statement. In order to redeem this financial aid benefit, you must apply for a campus FWS position on Handshake using an Exchange-approved resume. Instructions for getting started on Handshake and gaining resume approval can be found on our Student Employment page.

Not sure if you are FWS eligible? Check with Financial Aid.

The first thing you should do to earn credit and enroll in an internship course is to talk to your advisor before the internship begins. Standards for internship credit and requirements vary based on academic discipline. You may contact us with additional questions.

Business majors seeking credit for an internship must request approval on Handshake.

So you've got your job on campus. What now? In order to verify your employment and officially be added to payroll, you must go through the cleared-to-work process. After applying for your job and receiving the offer for on-campus work, you will:

  • Wait for communication from The Exchange via email. This will happen within two business days.
  • The email from The Exchange will detail your next steps in visiting human resources, MH 115.
  • HR will then continue the hiring process with notifications to you about any documents, etc. that are needed to complete hiring. Once cleared, you will receive clearance to present to your supervisor to begin working.

No student should begin working prior to obtaining clearance from HR. Students must re-apply and obtain a new clearance each academic year and for summer employment.
